Dad and son with brain injury spent four years of hell living in derelict bus in Cork

A father and son have told of their four years of hell living in a derelict bus.

Shocking pictures show the squallor that Patrick and Adrian Walsh have been calling their home outside Cork.

Adrian, 37, said living in the vehicle is “horrible” and he would love to have access to basic necessities.

He added: “It’s horrible coming into winter. I’m a sick man.

“I just want a toilet, running water, a shower, things like that.”

Patrick said his son suffers from a brain injury and a number of other issues after being assaulted in Wales.

He told PJ Coogan on 96fm: “We were in every hotel but he [Adrian] does his toilet in the bed and they threw us out.

“Adrian was attacked in Wales, he was climbing over the bridge and then a rock came loose and knocked him on the head and he fell 20ft down.

“A group of young lads came along and hit him, stole all his things and the guard said they didn’t think he’d live through the night.”

Inside the bus there are places to sleep plus a mini-kitchen and table, while the pair use a chemical toilet.

Patrick, who has been homeless for 25 years, and his son had been living in their van in the docks before moving to the bus.

Their windows blew out during a recent storm and things are now looking desperate as winter closes in.

The two of them had been getting support from Adrian’s mother who used to bring them food and wash their clothes.

But tragedy struck when she died suddenly in May.

Since then they have been washing themselves in the nearby river but say the water attracts rats which they can’t stop from getting into the bus.

St Vincent de Paul have been providing some support for the pair who also found themselves flooded recently.
