Dad and son who performed iconic Scots hit Caledonia become internet sensations

A teacher who belted out the song ‘Caledonia’ from his doorstep thought his performance was just for the neighbours.

Now nearly one million people have seen Ross Allan’s performance, and he said: “I am truly amazed . . .it was only supposed to be in earshot of my neighbours.

“It went mental and this whole online world was probably one I was not prepared for.

“The exposure has taken us all back a wee bit.”

A resident in the Prestwick Street captured Ross’s singing and guitar plucking in a perfect rendition of the Dougie MacLean favourite.

Ross was ably backed by his son Rory, ten, on keyboard (both pictured below).

The neighbour then put the footage online and within 48 hours it had several hundred thousand views.

The dad-of-three is head of PE at Grange Academy in Kilmarnock and like his pupils is stuck at home.

After the 8pm clap for NHS workers a week past Thursday, Ross attached his mic to a speaker and let rip.

What was not broadcast was his second song, “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” by the Proclaimers.

Ross said: “I am self taught at both piano and guitar and my kids enjoyed doing the clap for the first couple of weeks.

“It was my kids that egged me on to sing to the street.

“I thought the words to ‘Caledonia’ were rather appropriate for what people are feeling right now.”

He added: “With more time on our hands it has encouraged me to play a bit of music and I think it has helped the family.

“The only public thing I have done before is for a few friends where I have played a song at their weddings.

“The requests are all coming in now.

“A friend texted me the other day and said across all social media platforms there was well over half a million views.

“It is now heading towards the million mark.”
