Dad accused of child cruelty says: "I never done it, I love my girls"

A dad told a jury he was not guilty of assaulting his wife and daughters.

The 35-year-old denies common assault and two charges of causing cruelty to a person under 16.

It is alleged he assaulted his wife and hit, pinched and burned his girls.

But he told Bristol Crown Court: "I swear to my God I never done it.

"It's not true at all."

Bristol Live is not naming him to protect the identities of the complainants.

The accused told the jury when police arrived at his home near Bristol his wife told them "Please help me, please help me."

He recalled how he had been watching football on TV and said his wife and children cried when police entered.

The dad told the court: "I told the female police officer my wife was lying.

"Nothing happened on that day at all.

"She's not telling the truth.

"Nothing happened, actually."

Jennifer Tallentire, defending, put the allegations to her client, starting with a claim he hit his daughters.

He told the court: "I never hit my kids.

"I love them so much, they are my kids.

"I never scratched them."

He told the jury he kept his fingernails short and the judge asked him to leave the witness box and show his hands to them close-up.

The dad also told the jury he had not burned them or placed a heated spoon on one youngster's tongue.

He denied leaving marks on the girls.

He said: "I didn't know they had those marks on them."

The case continues.
