The animal has since been put down after it lunged at officers, Yahoo News reported.

Prior to the attack Mr Whitney had been in an argument with 36-year-old Brody Gardner, 9News reported.

The fatal mauling was not the first time that the dog had attacked someone.

Mr Whitney and Mr Gardner had to have plastic surgery after the dog went for them both earlier this year.

According to 9News one woman said the dog had attacked "numerous children".

Western Australia Police homicide squad detectives are investigating the death.

A 36-year-old man was assisting with inquiries, but had not been charged, the force said.

A post mortem is due to be held today.
