DAA reveal new 'sensory room' at Dublin Airport to help passengers reduce stress and anxiety

A new 'sensory room' has been unveiled in Dublin Airport to help passengers reduce stress and anxiety before flights.

The Dublin Airport Authority says that the sensory room is undergoing its final touches before it opens to the public in two weeks time.

A spokesperson for the DAA told the Irish Mirror: "We’re very excited about our new sensory room.

"It’s almost ready. Finishing touches are being applied and it will be officially opened in the two weeks time."

But what is a sensory room and why do we need them?

Sensory rooms are a great way for children and adults with special needs to "express themselves through sensory integration" and as a way to explore their sensory needs, according to Irish expert Michelle Browne.

Browne, from Adam Sensory Zones, told the Irish Mirror the rooms will benefit people with autism, dementia, and other disabilities.

She said: "Sensory rooms are a great way for children and adults with special needs to express themselves through sensory integration and as a way explore their sensory needs.

"People with Autism, Dementia and other disabilities of all ages can benefit from Sensory Rooms in many different ways such as stimulating all the senses, reducing stress, anxiety and confusion, encouraging communication and creating a calm surrounding.

"This can be done by introducing products such as bubble tubes, fibre optics, interactive panels, calming music, soft lighting and wall floor projections.

"It is our passion to make as many places as possible accessible to give people with disabilities and their friends and families the best opportunities out there."

At the moment, these special rooms are difficult to come by with only a handful open to the public in Ireland.

Social media users have expressed their delight at the new addition to Dublin Airport.

One said: "Well done Dublin Airport. Looking forward to making good use of this room on our next trip. I have to say in general Dublin Airport is one of the best for accommodating families with special needs children."

Another added "Well done to all involved. Dublin airport is so busy and security so intrusive (necessarily so). Providing a calm environment for ASD flyers is a very welcome and thoughtful addition."
