D.R.A.M.: Big Baby D.R.A.M. review – wonderfully strange hip-hop-pop

D.R.A.M. rapper
Playfully weird … D.R.A.M.

As you might expect from a man posing with a golden doodle on his debut album sleeve, D.R.A.M. doesn’t always demand you take him seriously. He’s perhaps best known for Cha Cha, a Latin-infused, Super Mario-sampling viral track that inspired Drake’s Hotline Bling. There’s plenty more fooling around to be found on Big Baby D.R.A.M. – not least a duet with Erykah Badu about Wi-Fi connections – but the Virginia rapper’s playfulness is frequently channelled through his talent for crafting delightfully weird pop. Catchy piano lines and slurred chorus melodies feature on the likes of Cash Machine and Cute, and the overall psychedelic effect means that it feels perfectly natural when, say, Lil Yachty appears in the video of hit single Broccoli to play a red recorder. D.R.A.M is clearly having a laugh. Thankfully for us, he’s adept at translating that on to this record.
