D-day looms for huge new JD Wetherspoon pub in Headingley to get go-ahead

JD Wetherspoon will soon be able to open a new pub in Headingley, if its application for an alcohol licence is approved this month.

After a four-year battle with Leeds City Council planning bosses, the popular pub chain was granted planning permission to convert the former Elinor Lupton Centre, in Headingley Lane, into a pub last year.

The chain has applied for an alcohol licence, so it can serve booze at the premises until 10.30pm on weekdays and Sundays and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The council's licensing sub committee will decide whether to approve or reject the application for an alcohol licence when it meets next Tuesday, February 11.

Wetherspoon bought the Grade II listed building in 2015 and the chain has been looking to turn it into a pub ever since.

The building, which was used as part of Leeds Girls High School until 2004, is currently derelict and covered in graffiti.

There have been various objections from people living near the building, who have raised concerns about anti-social behaviour and noise.

However, Wetherspoon has told the council that fancy dress wearing drinkers taking part in the Otley Run will not be allowed in, there will be no loud music and the pub will not serve alcohol past 11pm.

The council's licensing officer has said the application for an alcohol licence should be approved.
