D-Day for 64,000 students as Junior Cert results released today

It's D-Day for more than 64,000 students around the country today as the Junior Cert results are released.

A total of 64,330 teens will be collecting their slips following the State exams in June.

And it’s good news for our economy as the number of students sitting the exams grew by 2.7% on last year’s figure.

There was an increase in youngsters tackling higher level papers in the core subjects of English, Irish and Maths, as well as History and Geography.

Following Junior Certificate reforms in 2017, this year was the first year that Science and Business Studies were examined at Common Level.

A massive 93% of students undertook the Science exam, with an impressive 76% achieving a merit or above, provisional results by the State Examinations Commission [SEC] showed last night. [thur]

In Business Studies, just over half of students took the exam with 78% landing a merit or higher.

2020 will see French, German, Spanish and Italian also given at Common Level.

The Irish exam will also be a little different, with Higher and Ordinary students both undertaking changed specifications of Teanga 1 and Teanga 2, which will change the syllabus.

2019 was also the final year for the Civil, Social and Political Education exam, which will no longer be examined.

While results will be available online today from examinations.ie, students can still collect their results from their school.

If they are unhappy with their grade and feel there has been a mistake in marking, they have a week to apply for a review and a possible change to the grade.

Eela Carr from the SEC said: “Applications for review of the Junior Certificate/Cycle examination results, which must be made through the candidate’s school, should be received by the State Examinations Commission no later than 5pm on Friday, October 11.

“The fee for this service is E32 per subject, which will be refunded in the event that a result is upgraded.

“Applications are accepted only from a school authority which must confirm that the result obtained is significantly at variance with the result expected.

“It is planned to issue the results of the appeals in the week ending November 22.

“The official marking schemes for all subjects will be published on the SEC website, www.examinations.ie  in the coming days.”
