Czech Republic close in on Scotland's Nations League top spot as Celtic star Hatem Elhamed red carded

The Czech Republic won a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Israel tonight and are in a dangerous position to prevent Scotland from qualifying to the Nations League A section as group winners.

Vladimir Darida got the only goal in a tight game that saw Celtic defender Hatem Elhamed sent off in the 81st minute.

Scotland's loss to Slovakia means they face a nervous final match against Israel to decide their fate.

Jaroslav Sihavy's side face Slovakia at home on Wednesday and a win would pip the Scots if we lose or draw our away match against the Israelis.

A win would see us home in top spot no matter what happens with the Czech.

The group winners are promoted to the A section of the next Nations League alongside the tournament's big boys.

While that means tough games, the nations you are likely to play will mostly qualify through the standard group format.

In the last Nations League, only Iceland didn't make it from this group of elite nations and that meant they were put into the play-offs despite finishing bottom of their group and without a win.

It has the twin attraction then of providing Scotland with glamour games and also gives an excellent path to the play-offs.
