Cyriel Dessers leaves Rangers as striker bids emotional farewell

Cyriel Dessers has finalised a permanent exit from Rangers.

The striker has joined Panathinaikos in a deal worth £3.5m plus add-ons.

The Nigeria international, 30, scored over 50 times for the Ibrox club during his two-years stint in Glasgow. He was signed by Michael Beale from Cremonense for around £4m.

Dessers had wanted to leave the club for Greece earlier this window when AEK Athens saw Rangers reject a bid for the forward.

Russell Martin confirmed after yesterday's 0-0 draw with Celtic, in which Dessers came off the bench as a substitute, that the forward had "probably" played his last game for the club.

The striker's professionalism has been praised by Martin despite a desire to leave Ibrox.

Dessers posted an emotional goodbye on social media.

He wrote: "It was an absolute honour to wear the No.9 at Rangers, something that will fill me with pride for the rest of my life.

"I want to wish everybody at Rangers all the best, take good care of the club, you guys are so important.

"I want to thank the fans that supported me. If you can push and support the players, big things will be within reach for this beautiful club."

Dessers endured one of the most difficult starts in recent memory at Ibrox, scoring just one league goal by October in the 2023/24 season and repeatedly facing jeers from his own fans.

However, despite some high-profile misses, the Nigerian international who previously played for Feyenoord would go on to score over 50 goals for Rangers.

A club statement reads: "Rangers Football Club can today confirm the departure of Cyriel Dessers to Panathinaikos for an undisclosed fee.

"The striker, who joined Rangers in the summer of 2023, scored 52 goals in his time with the club, making over 100 appearances.

"He also won a League Cup, was SPFL Premiership top scorer and claimed the Sam English Bowl.

"Everyone at the club thanks Cyriel for his contribution during his time in Glasgow, and we wish him well for the future."
