Cyprus tourists 'tried to save' drowning Brit, 21, while lifeguards 'on their phones'

Horrified tourists reportedly tried to save a young Brit holidaymaker who drowned in a Cyprus pool while distracted lifeguards were seen 'on their phones'.

The 21-year-old, who was found unconscious and floating in the water at the King Evelthon hotel in the Tomb of the Kings area on the Cypriot island of Paphos, tragically died on Tuesday night.

The young man - thought to have been on holiday with his parents - was found at around 6pm, a Paphos police spokesman told the Cyprus Mail.

His body was hauled from the pool but an eyewitness has alleged the lifeguards were too far away to notice the man drowning.

A witness told The Sun the unconscious Brit was only noticed by lifeguards as an entertainer screamed at them - after he had already been pulled out of the pool.

The lifeguards had been seen using their mobile phones, according to the witness, as they were allegedly too far away from the action to see the incident unfold.

A holidaymaker at the Cyprus hotel described the incident as "heartbreaking to watch" as the woman who found the Brit was said to be in shock.

The tourist took to Facebook and wrote in a post: "It really was heartbreaking to watch. They were working on him for ages but didn't get anywhere.

"The poor woman that found him is in a right state bless her."

Lifeguards performed emergency CPR but were unable to rouse the young Brit as he was rushed to Paphos General Hospital in an ambulance.

Medics took him through to intensive care and intubated him but he couldn't be saved. He was pronounced dead at around 9pm, according to local media reports.

The police have ruled out the possibility of criminal activity.

A Foreign Office spokesperson told The Sun: 'We are providing consular support to the family of a British national who has died in Cyprus.'

Police are investigating the incident as an autopsy is set to be carried out to determine the cause of the Brit's death.
