Cyprus to open to Irish tourists this month as Spain, Portugal and more give dates for holidays

The Cyprus government has confirmed that it will open its border to fully vaccinated holidaymakers later this month, as it updates the green list of countries that can send tourists.

From May 10, tourists from 65 countries will be permitted to book and travel to Cyprus on their holidays, provided they are fully vaccinated.

Tourism Minister Savvas Perdios told reporters: "We are confident that once our epidemiological picture improves, charter flights will be allowed, something we expect to happen in the coming weeks as the vaccination rollout progresses."

Health protocols such as mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing will still be in place for tourists travelling to Cyprus on their holidays.

EU travel plans

Popular holiday spot Spain has confirmed the country will welcome tourists in June and is on target for implementing the "Digital Green Certificates", renamed as the EU-Covid-19 certificate.

This will allow for ease of travel restrictions in time for the summer season, the Spanish Tourism Board stated on Friday April 30.

The EU Covid-19 Certificate will provide digital proof that a person has either been vaccinated against Covid-19, received a negative PCR test for the virus or recently recovered from the disease.

The Certificate will be accepted in all EU member states and will be issued by national healthcare systems such as hospitals, test centres and other health authorities.

Countries like Bulgaria have already begun to resume their international tourism, allowing people to enter from abroad, on the condition they can provide a vaccination cert, a negative PCR or antigen test, or a medical certificate to confirm that they have had and recovered from Covid-19 up to six months prior to entry.

Greece hopes to begun re-opening the country for tourists from May 14, with Italy currently planning to reopen from May 15.

Tourists hoping to travel to France and Malta will have to wait until early June.

Portugal has yet to confirm a specific date on when the country will begin receiving tourists from abroad.
