Cynthia Nixon says Sex And The City reboot will portray gay characters 'properly'

Cynthia Nixon says the Sex And The City reboot will do a better job of portraying gay characters than it has in the past.

And Just Like That made its debut earlier this month and sees Cynthia reprise her role as Carrie's "ride or die" Miranda.

The actress, 55, who is in a same sex relationship, says as much as she loves the old Sex And The City, it would miss the mark culturally if it were made now.

"As wonderful as [SATC] is, to do that show right now would be incredibly tone-deaf," she said.

"It’s part of the reason we wanted to do the show – to go back and [undo] the things that we really got wrong.

"We had gay characters [in SATC], but a lot of the LGBT stuff in it was purely for comedic effect – and now rings harsh on the ear, I have to say," reports Elle.

And Just Like That now presents people of colour and gender non-binary characters alongside its leads for the first time.

The fabulous Sara Ramirez plays Che Diaz, a non-binary podcast host while "black Charlotte" Lisa Todd Wexley is played by the beautiful Nicole Ari Parker.

Cynthia is married to Christine Marinoni and previously revealed her son Seph, 21, was transgender.

Sephs' father is the actress' ex-husband, Danny Mozes, who also shares son Charles with Cynthia.

The actress also has a son, Max, with her wife, Christine.

Once in the running to be elected Governor of New York, Cynthia is a passionate supporter of women's and LGBT rights and uses her fame to promote equality.

Last year she was the face of a powerful video about the huge pressures women face.

In the video Cynthia criticises how women's bodies are constantly examined and commented on and addresses the victim-blaming culture today.

In And Just Like That, fans see that Miranda has ditched corporate law only to find herself navigating the world of political correctness in present day New York.

She makes a massive faux pas regarding her teacher's braids only to compound her embarrassment further by being accused of being a "white saviour".

Since its shocking debut earlier this month fans Sex and the City fans were delighted to be reunited with the characters from their favourite series.

"Just watched the show. It really is like spending time with old friends. Here’s to a new chapter," one Twitter user advised their followers on Thursday.

Another agreed saying: "Thanks @hbomax for letting me watch what happened next. Welcome back Miranda, welcome back Charlotte, welcome back beloved Carrie!!"

And Just Like That… is available now on Sky Comedy and streaming service NOW.
