Cynthia Nixon is backing calls for Andrew Cuomo to resign, two years after the two faced off in the race for New York governor.

Cuomo on Friday was facing increasing pressure to leave office amid allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour. He has denied the allegations and said he doesn’t intend to resign.

On Twitter, Nixon has made it clear she believes Cuomo should step away from his current position as New York governor.

She recently shared a video in which New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson stressed his faith in an independent investigation into the allegations.

“I guess Cuomo still has one defender,” Nixon tweeted in reference to Johnson along with a list of allegations faced by Cuomo, adding: “How much more evidence do you need @CoreyinNYC?”

Nixon has also shared statements from Representatives Antonio Delgado, Mondaire Jones, Nydia Velázquez, Jamaal Bowman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Jerry Nadler all calling for Cuomo to resign.

Nixon ran against Cuomo in New York’s 2018 gubernatorial race. He defeated her in September of that year and retained the office, which he has held since 2011.

Cuomo on Friday said during a phone call with reporters, according to The Associated Press: “I'm not going to resign. I did not do what has been alleged. Period.”

He added: “He added: "People know the difference between playing politics, bowing to cancel culture and the truth.”

New York’s next gubernatorial election will take place in 2022.
