Cyclone Michaung: Tamil Nadu declares holiday for schools, colleges and govt offices on Dec 5

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday on December 5 for schools, colleges, and government offices barring departments involved in emergency services like police, fire and rescue services, local bodies, hospitals, electricity, milk distribution, and water supply in wake of cyclone Michaung, which is likely to make a landfall between Nellore and Machilipattanam on Tuesday forenoon.

A release from the Department of Information and Public Relations said the Adyar and Cooum rivers are in spate as the city and suburbs received record rainfall and the government has been taking adequate measures to shift the people living along the banks of the two rivers to safer locations.

The government also urged the people in Chennai corporation, Chengalpettu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts to extend necessary cooperation and coordination to the government and shift to camps in safer locations. The release said the government has made adequate arrangements for food, shelter, medical attention, and other necessities at the camps.

The government has established 24-hour control rooms with toll-free numbers - 1913, 25619206/ 207/ 208 (Chennai corporation), 18004254355 and 18004251600 (Tambaram corporation) and 18004255109 (Avadi corporation) to enable the public to contact the officials concerned when in distress to seek help.
