Cyclone Mandous: Over 2,000 trees fallen in Chennai including forest areas

CHENNAI: A total of 1,115 trees inside Chennai city areas and another 1,000 trees in the forest areas have fallen after the Mandous cyclone in the city.

As per the assessment on Monday morning, the forest department officials said that about 800 trees in the Chengalpet social forestry division, 10 in Pallikaranai eco park, 100 on Chengalpet chennai highway and 100 in Kilpakkam Urban forestry plantations have fallen. About 5% of them have roots intact and will be replanted, the district forest officer, Shanmugam told TOI.

The Greater chennai corporation officials said that of the 1115 trees 1041 have been cleared. This includes avenue trees, trees inside parks and in playgrounds. Maximum number of trees falls was reported in Adyar, Kodambakkam and Thiru Vi Ka nagar.

Deputy commissioner, works, S Prasanth told TOI that over 25000 trees were pruned before the monsoon and before the cyclone. “That has helped save a lot of trees.”
