A cyclone killed at least 84 people as it ripped through India and Bangladesh at up to 115mph.
There are fears villages in low-lying Bangladesh could be cut off by floods caused by Cyclone Amphan as it sped onto India’s east coast on Wednesday.
In the Indian mega-city of Kolkata, which has a population of more than 14 million, roads were flooded and most residents were left without power.
Thousands of trees were uprooted, electricity and telephone lines brought down and houses were flattened.
Cars and trees were carried away by floods.
More than 2.5 million Bangladeshis were evacuated before the super cyclone struck, but some refused to get into crowded shelters due to Covid-19 fears.
The world’s biggest refugee camp, near Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, housing a million exiled Rohingya, was damaged.
Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister, said: “I have experienced a war-like situation today.
Pankaj Kumar, of Christian Aid, said Amphan had destroyed “homes, communications, crops and livelihoods”.
