Cyclists warned that 'massive' fuel spillage in Edinburgh's city centre could pose danger

Cyclists are being warned to take care after a "massive" fuel spillage was reported in Edinburgh's city centre .

Fuel can be seen on the road surface on George Street close to St Andrew Square, with reports that the leak has continued west towards Hanover Street.

Twitter user @hank_chief has warned that this could "pose a major problem to those on two wheels".

According to Cycle Law Scotland those riding a bike are at "higher risk of sustaining serious injury due to diesel spillages on a road surface".

As the contact between tyres and a road surface is relatively small this results in a lack of protection, and can cause serious injury if the tyres lose grip and the cyclist falls.

The City of Edinburgh Council responded to the tweet to say that the issue has been reported under a reference number.

Elsewhere, Leith Street was closed this morning as part of the massive works on the nearby St James' Quarter. All you need to know about the road closure can be found here.
