Cyclists hit cars with foam rollers as they campaign for more cycle lanes

A cyclist has apologised after his foam roller hit a car during a protest.

Around 15 campaigners, who want more cycle lanes in the city to allow for social distancing pedalled and walked from Newfoundland Way to the Bearpit and back again on Monday (May 18) between 4pm and 5pm.

Their aim was to raise awareness about the importance of the 'reallocation of road space' as coronavirus lockdown measures are eased.

However, protesters caused controversy after knocking 'several cars' during their loop.

Driver Samantha Mullally said she spotted the rollers hit vehicles as they approached traffic lights on Bond Street.

"If we had drivers hitting cyclists the whole world would be up in arms," said the 38-year-old. "I don't know what they were trying to prove because the noodles only went length ways.

"There were quite a few cars beeping, everyone was getting annoyed."

Organiser David Angel apologised for the incident.

The 46-year-old said: "It does get pretty narrow on that section of the road. I want to apologise to anyone we may have hit by accident.

"We had a debriefing after and decided to not go along that route again because we were aware it was causing some issues."

The Easton resident said protesters planned to cycle round the city centre in the coming weeks to show how much space people needed to stay safe.

For residents to cycle and walk around Bristol respecting the two metre rules, David said more bike lanes were needed.

"We would like the council to introduce temporary cycle lanes like other cities have around the world," David previously told Bristol Live.

"Grant Shapps (Transport Secretary) has made £250 million in grants available for this purpose.

"People are going to need a lot of space if they are going to safely get around our city."
