Cyclist who knocked girl, 5, down as he passed ordered to pay 86p compensation

A cyclist who was widely criticised online after knocking a little girl to the ground has been ordered to pay just €1 (86p) in compensation.

Footage of the incident in a snow-covered park in Baraque Michel, Belgium was shared last year, prompting anger on social media.

The clip appeared to show the cyclist sticking his knee out as he passed the five-year-old - knocking her down.

A court has ruled that the man should pay only €1 and and receive a suspended sentence because he has suffered enough online.

The cyclist had been found guilty of deliberately kneeing the girl.

The incident happened on Christmas Day in 2020 (Newsflash)

Video of the incident was shot by dad Patrick Mpasa, who had been filming his wife and daughter on Christmas Day 2020.

He said at the time he had chased after the cyclist, who had showed no regret when he was stopped and challenged.

The dad later posted the footage online and asked people if she should report what had happened to the police, the newspaper said.

A complaint was then made and a witness appeal was launched before charges were brought.

The cyclist told a judge: "When I was riding close to the girl, I felt my rear wheel slide off.

"To avoid a fall, I brought myself back into balance with a movement of the knee.

"I felt that I hit the girl, but did not immediately realise that she had fallen."

A judge in Verviers said the man had no intention of harming the girl and had already faced criticism on social media.

But they added: "He gave the child a knee thrust out of sheer annoyance because for the umpteenth time an obstacle came his way."

The cyclist faced up to a year in prison but was handed the fine - equivalent to 86p - and a suspended sentence.

A cycling group described the culprit's behaviour as "unacceptable" in the aftermath of the incident.
