Cyclist who allegedly punched Brisbane bus driver charged

A 46-year-old man has been charged over a physical altercation with a Brisbane City Council bus driver on Tuesday night, with CCTV footage released by the police appearing to show the pair in a fight.

Police have alleged a cyclist followed a bus to the Toowong depot in Brisbane's inner-west after being overtaken by the vehicle about 8:35pm on Sylvan Road.

At the depot, the cyclist allegedly punched the 49-year-old bus driver in the face several times before riding off.

The driver was left with cuts to his eye and lip.

Police said a man from Kenmore went to Indooroopilly police station early this morning over the incident.

He has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and will face court in Brisbane on September 14.

We're not safe out there: union

Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) spokesperson Tom Brown said the incidents highlighted the danger drivers face.

"We're not safe out there and we're not even safe in the depot, these guys can come into the depot and get us, so that's really worrying," Mr Brown said.

"What other workplace does that happen, you couldn't walk into a library or a bank or to Brisbane administration centre, security would be all over you, but apparently you can get away with it here."

A Brisbane City Council spokesman said it was assisting in the investigation.

"Council condemns assaults against Brisbane bus drivers," he said.

"Any assault is a criminal act and may be subject to court action."

Strike action continues

Driver safety has been central to the ongoing dispute between the enterprise bargaining dispute between the union and council.

Drivers were set to walk off the job today between 10:00am and 2:00pm and from 6:00pm to 10:00pm Friday.

Union members have also refused to take fares at times during the long-running dispute.
