Cyclist taken to hospital with head injury after serious crash in Gateshead

A cyclist has been taken to hospital with a head injury after being involved in a crash with another vehicle in Gateshead.

Emergency crews attended the scene of a collision involving a cyclist and another vehicle outside a private address on Springwell Road in Wrekenton, Gateshead from around 4.20pm on Saturday (May 7). A young man was found to have sustained a head injury as a result of the incident.

The road was closed to all traffic while emergency crews remained at the scene which led to delays in and around Wrekenton.

The young casualty was taken to the Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment on his injury. His condition is currently unknown.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 16:24 on Saturday to reports of a road traffic collision between a cyclist and a vehicle outside a private address on Springwell Road in Wrekenton, Gateshead.

"We sent one emergency ambulance and took a young male patient to the RVI with a head injury."

Northumbria Police also attended the crash and have said an investigation into the incident is now under way.

A spokeswoman said: "We attended after 4.30pm last night to respond to reports of road accident on Springwell Road in Gateshead. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
