Cyclist taken to hospital after serious collision near Cowgate Morrisons

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after a 'serious collision' in the west end of Newcastle.

Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

The incident occurred at around 6pm near Cowgate Morrisons, close to the bus intersection of the A167, Two Ball Lonnen and Ponteland Road.

Emergency services were called to the scene and traffic was severely disrupted.

Traffic diversions around Stamfordham Road and Cowgate Interchange were put in place and the force warned the road was expected to be closed for 'some time'.

Ponteland Road was entirely closed heading Westbound throughout the evening but was reopened at around 9pm.
