Cyclist taken to hospital after collision involving bus on city centre road

A main city centre road was closed and emergency services called after a cyclist was hit by a bus this afternoon.

Police say a male cyclist was taken to hospital following the collision, which took place at approximately 12pm on King Street. He suffered injuries to his head and shoulder which are not believed to be life threatening.

No police cordon was in place, but the road was closed between Cross Street and Spring Gardens. Witnesses said a nearby car was also involved and became dented in the collision.

A woman who appeared to be the owner of the dented car was visibly shaken as she spoke to police following the accident. One eyewitness said the crash was "not pleasant at all" and "people were really upset over the incident".

A number one Manchester free bus was stopped in the middle of the road, but did not appear to be damaged. The scene was attended by police and ambulance services.

Cyclists in Manchester have spoken to the Manchester Evening News of the need to be "wary" at all times - especially on roads with only a painted cycle lane, or none at all.

Katy Holliday, 37, recalled a time she was taken to A&E after being 'doored' - when a car opens its door on a cyclist without looking - outside The Christie hospital.

"On streets with parked it's often a compromise between avoiding that and being beeped by drivers in cars behind," she said.

"All the more reason to be wary of painted lines alongside parking spaces, but it takes confidence to ride wider."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 12pm police attended an RTC on King Street, Manchester where a bus had hit a male cyclist. He suffered a head injury that is not life threatening and has been taken to hospital."
