Cyclist suffers serious injuries in crash with car outside school

A cyclist has been taken to hospital with "serious injuries" to his head and back after a crash outside a Liverpool city centre primary school.

Pictures show an ambulance and police car at the scene of this morning's smash by LIPA Primary School in Upper Duke Street.

There is no suggestion any pupils were caught up in the crash.

Ambulance officials confirmed they were called just before 11am and send an ambulance and rapid response vehicle to the scene.

A North West Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a man in his 20s suffered "serious" head and back injuries and was taken to hospital.

Merseyside Police said the crash involved a pedal bike and a Ford Galaxy and the car driver, who escaped injury, stopped at the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: "We were called just before 11am to Upper Duke Street at the junction with Rodney Street to reports of a traffic accident involving a pedal cycle and Ford Galaxy.

"The driver stopped at the scene."

She added: "The male pedal cyclist was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital."
