Cyclist shames 58 pavement parkers in helmet camera footage

A cyclist has shamed 58 brazen drivers who parked their cars across pavements in Liverpool in footage captured on his helmet camera.

The video, which was uploaded to Twitter, shows 58 cars fully parked on the pavement of Macket’s Lane, Hunts Cross.

In the clip, which was filmed yesterday, the cyclist rides along Macket’s Lane highlighting cars using pavements as a parking space.

Speaking to the ECHO, the cyclist, who wants to remain anonymous, said: “I’m just getting sick of it. When I walk with my kids down Macket’s Lane, which is just one road that we walk down, we’re squeezing between parked cars, bins and walls.

“Trying to get to school, we’re walking into the road to get past and what really annoys me is a lot of them have got driveways but they don’t want to use them, and I don’t know why.”

Speaking about this particular video, the cyclist added: “Some of the vehicles are actually blocking the pavement completely. If you had a pram, you would have to go on the road to get past.

“I am genuinely fearful for safety as I don’t like walking around certain roads because pavements are so narrow."

In the past, Liverpool drivers have been warned that ‘using pavements as car parks’ is putting people at risk.

Councillor Pam Thomas, Liverpool City Council 's cabinet member for an inclusive and accessible city, has spoken out about problems that footpaths being blocked with cars can create.

The local authority is looking to raise awareness and tackle the issue, especially those flouting the rules near school gates, through its Don't Park on the Pavement initiative.

Children, disabled pedestrians and those with prams or pushchairs are said to be especially at risk.

It's an issue which is close to Cllr Thomas' heart as she has been a wheelchair user for 15 years, and believes motorists are often unaware that what they are doing can be very dangerous.

Speaking to the ECHO, she said: "People parking on the pavements around the city make it so hard for people to get by, and even more so if you are a disabled person or you're with your family. I don't think people understand the dangers of it."

According to Cllr Thomas, parking on pavements is a city-wide issue caused by drivers looking for quick and convenient options rather than intentionally setting out to cause difficulties and injuries.

Unfortunately there aren't many rules in place to stop people from parking on the pavements, which is why Cllr Thomas is appealing for people to use their common sense.

The council will continue to enforce current regulations but to help make Liverpool's pavements even safer it will be introducing more double yellow lines - especially in areas outside of the city centre.

Cllr Thomas said: "A lot of people don't realise that double yellow lines apply across the pavement and you can get a ticket from parking on the pavement where there are double yellows on the road.

"Sometimes pavement parking is permitted and that will be marked out, such as in narrow streets with terraced housing."

The cyclist who shared the video online believes there is no easy fix to the growing problem adding: “There have literally been occasions where I’ve had to wait for all the cars to pass and then it’s just like crossing the road just to get past the car.

“At the end of the day, the pavement is for people and the road is for cars.

“We all know people speed and I keep bringing the issues up on Twitter and hopefully people will see the support for this type of stuff.

“There’s no one solution but some kid is going to get hit and I’m scared it is going to happen to my kids.”
