Driver arrested after 'failing drugs test' as cyclist rushed to hospital with head injuries following Kingsway road collision

A cyclist has been rushed to hospital with a head injury following a collision on a major route into Manchester.

Police say a driver has failed a breathalyser and drugs test following the incident - and has been arrested.

The A5079 Kingsway was closed inbound from Moseley Road this morning due to the incident involving a car and a cycle.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the scene on Kingsway at 6.22am.

They say a male patient suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital.

North West Ambulance Service were called out, and arrived at the scene at 6.35am.

Two fire engines, one from Withington and one from Gorton, attended the scene and left the scene at 7.26am.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) tweeted : “Travel Update: A5079 Kingsway is closed inbound from Moseley Road roundabout to Slade Lane junction (Levenshulme). Please use an alternative route.”

TfGM later tweeted to say the road was reopened at 8.56am.
