Cyclist rushed to hospital after careless driver clattered into him in Airdrie

A man whose careless driving left a cyclist seriously injured has been fined.

Andrew Carroll, 30, wasn’t paying attention properly when he turned onto Airdrie’s Rochsolloch Road in June.

A cyclist clattered into the East Kilbride man’s vehicle and subsequently required an ambulance to rush him to hospital.

The procurator fiscal said: “At 7am the witness was riding a bike, going east along Deedes Street in Airdrie.

“The accused’s vehicle turned right onto Rochsolloch Road into the path of the witness. He collided with the car, causing him to fall from his bike onto the road.

“Police stopped to assist and an ambulance was required, which took the witness to Monklands hospital. The accused was cautioned and charged and he said in reply, ‘I can only apologise.

“Weather conditions at the time were good and the road was dry. The witness suffered multiple injuries.”

Sheriff Collins said: “The sympathy of the court goes to the witness but I can’t take his injuries into account on a careless driving charge.”

Carroll’s solicitor said: “He was a new driver at the time and had only passed his test a year before.

“At the time he was on his way to work, but as a result of this incident he suffers from anxiety and is no longer in employment.

“He’s a carer for his wife who has health issues. They are on universal credit but he’s engaging with the job centre.”

Sheriff Collins said: “You are fined £200.

“I have reduced this from £300 because of your plea. You’ll also have five penalty points added to your licence.”
