Cyclist riding 40 mph barely avoids disaster with deer

A cyclist traveling 40 mph downhill had the misfortune of a deer crossing the road in front of him with no time to brake or change direction. Fortunately for Gerry Simas, he managed to barely avoid a disastrous collision by only a split second.

Simas was riding down Park Avenue in Rocklin, Calif., when the incident occurred under dark conditions.

Simas told Caters News Agency he clipped the back hoof of the deer but maintained control of the bike. It happened so fast you can’t make out the contact on the video taken from Simas’s front-facing Cycliq bike camera.

“This road follows along the green space so I do encounter wildlife quite a bit on these rides, although most of the time it’s with wild turkeys,” he told Caters, which posted the video Tuesday.

“This is the first time I have encountered a deer crossing on this particular stretch, which happened to be the downhill side when speeds were approximately 40 mph.

“I headed home to clean out my shorts after that encounter.”
