Cyclist on electric bike ploughed into 13-year-old arthritic dog on pedestrians-only coastal path

Anthony Davies, 62, was out for a walk with his 13-year-old spaniel on a pedestrians-only path when a cyclist struck the dog with hefty force.

"I've had Bonga for 13 years, ever since he was a puppy," said Mr Davies, a retired dentist from Langland.

"He has arthritis and finds it hard to get going at the best of times. Bonga was on the lead and we were not moving fast by any measure. I don't understand how the cyclist couldn't see us. He had plenty of time to slow down and reach a stop before getting to us, but that didn't happen."

The path Mr Davies and Bonga were on is located just before the Surfside Cafe in Rotherslade

According to Mr Davies the cyclist, said to be roughly in his 60s and on what appeared to be a retro-style electric hybrid cycle, hit Bonga at full force.

"My first concern was with my dog," Mr Davies explained. "I went straight to him, and said to the man 'You shouldn't be cycling here'. I was met with a flurry of abuse. He started shouting saying that I shouldn't be in the effing way, and then he cycled off."

Some nearby witnesses kept guard of Bonga whilst Mr Davies ran in the direction of the cyclist, but he was long gone before he could reach him.

Bonga sustained injuries that left him unable to walk and lay down for a few weeks, but he has since made a full recovery.

"He means the absolute world to me. I can't imagine life without him. I had to lift him up to get him on four paws and lift him again to get him back into a laying position." Mr Davies said.

"The vet, who has known him his whole life, was horrified at how this could have happened. I just want people to pay attention to the signs that are clearly in place to stop cyclists. This could have been far worse for Bonga."
