Cyclist killed by truck at major intersection in inner-city Melbourne suburb

Police said the cyclist died after being struck around 2:15pm.

A cyclist has died after she was hit by a truck at a major Melbourne intersection.

Police said the woman was struck at the intersection of Punt and Toorak roads, in the inner-city suburb of South Yarra, about 2:15pm.

She died at the scene.

Police said they were speaking with the driver of the truck, who stopped at the scene.

Punt Rd was closed for a number of hours from Toorak Rd north to the Dobson St, near the Yarra River, causing gridlock on neighbouring streets.

The woman died on Tuesday about a kilometre away from the site where Dutch cyclist Gitta Scheenhouwer was killed in a hit-and-run incident in August.

The 27-year-old was cycling along a bike lane on Chapel Street, also in South Yarra, on a Sunday morning when she was hit by an allegedly stolen white Mercedes.

She was pinned against another car and died at the scene.

More than 180 people — including five cyclists — have died on Victoria's roads this year, the Transport Accident Commission said.

Ten cyclists were killed while riding in the state last year.
