Cyclist killed and man arrested after Bolton crash - police make urgent appeal for witnesses

A cyclist has died following a crash with a car in Bolton on Thursday evening (July 1).

Officers were called out to reports of a collision involving a light blue Saab 93 car and a cyclist on Edge Lane, in Horwich, at around 5.20pm yesterday.

Emergency services rushed out to deal with the crash, including Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics, the cyclist - a man aged in his 40s - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

GMP says that a 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death whilst disqualified from driving.

He has since been released under investigation, the force says.

Any witnesses are being urged to come forward to police with information or dash cam footage following the crash.

PC Simon Venguedasalon, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts remain with the man's family at this incredibly difficult time.

"I am hopeful that there are witnesses who may have seen the Saab or cyclist in the Horwich or Smithills areas shortly before the collision.

"If you have any information or dash cam footage please get in touch with police as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is urged to contact GMP by calling 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 2272 of July 1, 2021.

Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
