Cyclist killed after hit by car near Glenloch Interchange

Update: 'Ball of energy': Tributes flood in for cyclist killed on Glenloch Interchange

Update: P-plater in fatal crash appeared to be speeding, on wrong side of road: police

A 36-year-old woman cyclist has been struck by a car and killed after a collision near the Glenloch Interchange on Wednesday.

Police say the incident happened around 2.30pm on Lady Denman Drive.

The cyclist was travelling southbound on the roadway when the incident occurred.

The incident location on Lady Denman Drive had been sealed off and intersections around the area closed to traffic while the police collision investigation team made a full and lengthy assessment of the scene.

This is expected to cause major delays for evening commuters and those motorists intending to use Lady Denman Drive are advised to seek an alternate route.

The vehicle involved was extensively damaged on the left hand side after what appeared to have been an impact with a guard rail.

The woman is the second person to die on ACT roads this year.

Pedal Power, which represents cyclists in the ACT, has been continuing to lobby the ACT government heavily for more cycle lanes.

Lady Denman Drive does not have a dedicated cycle lane.

In Pedal Power's May Budget submission last year, it sought a commitment from the government "to ensuring that safe, segregated, cycling infrastructure is built as part of every new road project or road upgrade".

The group also urged the conversion of all on-road cycle lanes on roads with speed limits of 60kmh or above to be replaced by segregated cycle lanes or off-road cycle-only paths.

"This could occur with quick-build protected cycling lanes - initially on Northbourne Avenue, Bowen Drive and Commonwealth Avenue, followed by all trunk roads including Belconnen Way, Drakeford Drive, etc," the group stated in its submission.

In the ACT, drivers are required by law to keep a minimum passing distance of one metre when overtaking a cyclist at under 60kmh, with a distance of 1.5 metres required if a driver is overtaking at more than 60kmh.

On narrow roads on narrow roads, motorists are allowed to cross or straddle the centre lines, provided the driver has a clear view of any approaching traffic and that it is safe to do so. Last year there were 46 road deaths across the country involving cyclists, nine more than in the previous year.
