The victim was attacked by a group of people at around 10.45pm on Saturday night  in Crosby when he was hit with a hammer.

Police said the 22-year-old was cycling down Victoria Road when a group of people got out of small grey car and attacked him.

He was left in a critical condition.

This morning police have described his condition as 'serious but stable.'

A man aged 51, two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy were arrested yesterday on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

They have all now been released pending further investigations.

There was  a major police presence on Victoria Road yesterday morning when officers could be seen carrying out a meticulous search of the pavements and the front gardens of neighbouring properties.

The incident happened near the duck pond on Victoria Road, a residential street in the middle of Crosby.

Detective Chief Inspector Siobhan Gainer said to the ECHO : “This was a serious and violent assault which has left a man with significant injuries and I am determined to find the people responsible.

"Enquiries currently being carried out into the circumstances of what took place in the lead up to this incident but I would ask anyone who saw the cyclist or the grey car, which was possibly a Volkswagen Golf, in the Crosby area, last night to contact us.

“A number of people in the area came to the cyclist’s assistance following the assault but I would also like to speak to anyone who was driving past who may have seen or captured something  significant on their dash-cam footage.”

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 19100640212.
