Cyclist dies in hospital after crash with van in Shinrone, Co Offaly

A cyclist has tragically died in hospital after a crash with a van on Monday.

The man, who is in his 70s, was brought to Limerick University Hospital after the collision, but passed away yesterday.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision between a van and a cyclist that occurred on the Roscrea to Shinrone Road (R491), Mountheaton, Shinrone, Birr, Co. Offaly, on Monday 7 October at approximately 6:20pm.

"A male (cyclist) aged in his 70s was brought to Limerick University Hospital with serious injuries.

"He was pronounced dead on Wednesday 9 October as a result of his injuries.

"Gardaí at Birr Garda Station are appealing for witnesses who may have travelled on this road between 6:00pm and 6:30pm on the 7 of October, or anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact Birr Garda Station on 057 916 9710, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
