A40 crash: Cyclist dies after collision with lorry in west London

A cyclist has been killed by a lorry on the A40 in west London.

The collision caused a five-mile tailback when police shut the major commuter route into the capital.

Police were called at 6.20am to the A40 Western Avenue in Northolt to reports of the road traffic collision involving a cyclist and an HGV.

Witnesses described seeing a mangled bike at the rear of a lorry as the emergency services responded to the incident.

The driver of the lorry stopped and was not arrested.

The A40 was closed eastbound between Hillingdon Circus and the Polish War Memorial, with traffic diverted to Long Lane.

Scotland Yard today warned motorists to avoid the South Ruislip area.

The cyclist is the first to die on the capital’s roads in 2020. Five were killed last year.

Anyone with information, or who may have captured the collision on dashcam footage, is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 1171/03JAN.
