Cyclist airlifted to hospital after collision with a car in Benwell

A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital following a serious collision in Newcastle.

The man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with head injuries after the collision in the Benwell area on Friday evening .

Emergency services were called to Condercum Road shortly before 6pm to reports that a person had been hit by a car.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service were also dispatched to the scene and a police cordon was put in place.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed that they were on scene to assist the air ambulance and carry out investigations.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 5.49pm to reports of a collision between a pedal cyclist and a car.

"We dispatched a paramedics ambulance and also requested support from the air ambulance.

"One male patient has been taken to the RVI with head injuries."
