Cyclist, 70, taken to hospital and bypass closed after being hit by car

A busy bypass was closed after a cyclist in his 70s was hit by a car.

Around 9.30am yesterday, August 12, Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service received reports of a collision between a car and a cyclist.

The incident took place on Lodge Lane in Rainford and emergency services attended the scene, were the cyclist, described as in his 70s, was taken to hospital with a hip injury.

The man was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and the force confirmed today that the driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

Road closures were in place in the St Helens area but they have since re-opened.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "The 999 call was received at 09.29. A man in his 70s, the cyclist, was taken to hospital with a hip injury."

In a statement today, Merseyside Police said: "At around 9.30am yesterday (Thursday 12 August) we received a report of an RTC involving a car and a cyclist on Lodge Lane, Rainford.

"Emergency services attended and the cyclist was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

"The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

"Road closures were in place but have since re-opened."
