Cyclist, 60s, dies after horror crash on busy road in Rathcormac, Co Cork

A cyclist, 60s, died this morning after a horror crash in North Cork.

The collision between the pedal cyclist and car happened around 7am on the R639 in Rathcormac with the road closed as a result.

The motorcylist was pronounced dead at the scene and gardai remain at the scene as a forensic examination is carried out.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Fermoy are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred this morning, Friday 6th March 2020, on the R639 between Fermory and Rathcormac at approximately 7am.

"A male pedal cyclist (60) was fatally injured when a collision occurred between a car and his bicycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner has been notified and his body has been removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.

"Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are currently at the scene and the road is currently closed.

"Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses or any road users in the area who may have dashcam footage to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025 82100, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."

Motorists were this morning asked to use alternative routes with diversions in place immediately after the collision.

A spokesperson said earlier this morning: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 7am today, 06/03/2020, on the R639 just outside Rathcormac, Co. Cork. The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place."
