Cyclist, 20, threatened by man wielding a machete on Sunderland road

A cyclist was threatened with a machete when he was stopped by two men on a road in Sunderland.

At about 8.30pm on June 23, police received a report that a 20-year-old man had been assaulted as he was cycling on Springwell Road.

As he reached the central reservation near Lidl on Durham Road, he was stopped by two men who were also riding bikes

One of the men then threw the victim’s bike to the ground and threatened him with a machete before making off. It is believed that one of the men involved was known to the victim.

The victim was not injured in the incident but was left shaken by what happened.

An investigation has been launched and police are now asking for anyone who saw the altercation to come forward.

Officers also want to hear from anybody travelling on Springwell Road at that time who may have dashcam footage that can assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on their website or by ringing 101 quoting log 1184 230620.

Alternatively, you can email 8699@northumbria.pnn.police.uk.
