Cyclist, 17, dies after falling ill and being airlifted to hospital

A 17-year-old cyclist has died after falling ill in a street near Alfreton.

Derbyshire Police were called to Nottingham Road in Somercotes shortly after 1pm on Wednesday, May 28, following reports that a young man on a bicycle had fallen ill.

Police have since confirmed the teenager, who was taken to hospital by air ambulance, has died.

Officers closed the road to all traffic in both directions when they arrived, Derbyshire Live reports.

The Forensic Collision Investigation Unit and the Derbyshire Police vehicle examiner were at the scene for several hours.

The cordon was lifted at around 4pm, allowing traffic to move freely along the road.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and preparing a file for the coroner."
