Cycle protest set to take place on Cambuslang Main Street this weekend

A bike lane on Cambuslang Main Street will be taken over by a line of toy vacuum cleaners on Sunday as part of a nationwide protest calling for safer cycling.

The vacuums will stand in for protective barriers that campaigners want to see along the route near the former Hoover plant.

The ‘pop up protest’ is one of many being organised by campaign group Pedal on Parliament.

Anyone who would like cycling to be safer in South Lanarkshire is welcome to join the event at Cambuslang Station at 11am on Sunday.

Bikers will be invited to cycle in the lane on Main Street.

Organiser Derek York said: “Most people don’t want to cycle in amongst motor traffic – it puts them off.

“The current lanes are a start but paint is not protection.

“We need more physical barriers to stop motor vehicles driving or parking in bike lanes.

“If the whole route had protected cycleways, that would make it safe for anyone to ride to and from the town centre.

“We need to make cycling a safe, easy option in Cambuslang and elsewhere.

“We want to see more protected cycleways in South Lanarkshire to encourage more people to cycle and help cut congestion, pollution and improve people’s health.”

Mr York added: “Busy traffic is the main barrier  to cycling so we need to give people a safe space to cycle; especially on main roads.

“They are the routes people know and they’re direct, wide, lit and gritted in winter.

“Linking protected cycle lanes and off road paths into a proper network makes cycling a real option for families to get around with their kids and can cut traffic in the school run.”
