Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 Pro update: New 90fps mode and expanded ray tracing

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally getting its long-promised PlayStation 5 Pro upgrade on April 8.

The main changes are exactly what players were expecting from a PS5 Pro patch: more ray tracing options, higher frame rate, and upgraded PSSR support.

The update adds three PS5 Pro-specific graphics modes. Ray Tracing Pro is the new top-end option, with ray-traced reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting enabled. That mode targets 40fps on variable refresh rate displays and 30fps otherwise.

Performance mode will remain the highest frame rate option, and reaches up to 90fps on VRR displays while maintaining high image fidelity. The third option, Ray Tracing mode, is positioned between the two, combining select ray tracing enhancements with a 60fps target.

Another part of the update is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. PSSR is Sony’s console upscaler, akin to DLSS, FidelityFX, and XeSS.

Sony recently announced that upgraded PSSR support was rolling out globally across the PS5 Pro titles, so it’s unsurprising that Cyberpunk 2077 also utilizes this technology. The company added that the newer version of PSSR improves image stability, clarity in fine detail, and consistency across supported games.

Ray tracing was also updated, and CD Projekt Red said it implemented BVH8 support, allowing ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections. It’s a tuned version with more granular options, and no longer just an on/off switch between quality and performance modes.

While Sony did increase the prices on the entire range of PlayStation projects, this is still a welcome addition for those who already own both the console and the game. Considering that the latest rumor points to PlayStation 6 being delayed to 2028 or even 2029, meaningful updates to current games are needed to give the Pro console much-needed longevity.

As for Cyberpunk 2077 itself, it’s remarkable that the game that was much panned for its performance, especially on the base PlayStation 4, is now getting a graphical mode that delivers fully realized ray tracing on a console. Even years after its release, the game still remains the benchmark title for performance and visual fidelity, both for PC and consoles.
