Suspected hackers have attempted to steal credit card details during an online cyber security seminar.

The seminar run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors had to be cancelled after posts to its online platform asked users to click links where credit card details were requested.

At the time of the incident, 2500 people were logged in to the event with about 4800 people being registered.

In a statement, the institute said the links posted were not genuine and that it's not known if any users entered details.

The seminar was on new cyber governance principles developed by the institute and the Cyber Security Co-operative Research Centre.

Anyone with concerns has been urged to contact their financial institution as soon as possible.

The institute's managing director Mark Rigotti said authorities had been contacted following the suspected hack.

"On behalf of the AICD, I would like to apologise for the inconvenience and potential disruption this has caused," he said.

"We thank participants for their patience and understanding as we work through these issues.

"We recognise this experience has fallen well below the high standards our members rightly expect of the AICD."
