CWG 2022: Hussamuddin sails into pre-quarters with convincing win

Mohammed Hussamuddin rates his 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze as the top moment of his boxing career. Back to his happy hunting ground, Hussamuddin has found a reason to inspire him for a consecutive CWG medal.

Four years later, and determined to change the colour of his medal in Birmingham for his new-born daughter, the Telangana pugilist on Saturday paved the way in that direction by sailing into the pre-quarterfinals of the 57kg featherweight category with a comprehensive win by unanimous decision over South African Azomele Dyeyi in the Round of 32 bout.

Days after he made it to the 12-member Indian boxing contingent after defeating 2019 Asian Championship silver medallist Kavinder Singh Bisht during the CWG trials, where he sustained an injury in his left thumb, Hussamuddin had said he was better prepared this time around.

"I am going in with better clarity and knowledge of my game after having played against different opponents. Earlier, I used to rely on just my speed but now, the power has also improved," Hussamuddin had said.
