CWG 2022: Dedicating this gold medal to my brother and coaches, says weightlifter Achinta Sheuli

BIRMINGHAM: After clinching a gold medal in the men's 73kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022, weightlifter Achinta Sheuli dedicated his medal to his brother and coaches.

Sheuli topped the podium with a combined lift of 313kg. He lifted 143kg in his last attempt in the 'Snatch' round to create a new Commonwealth Games Record. Then with a successful lift of 170kg in his third clean and jerk attempt, the Indian finished with a total of 313kg.

"I am very happy. After overcoming many struggles, I won this medal. I will dedicate this medal to my brother and coaches. Next, I will prepare for Olympics," Sheuli told ANI.

Sheuli's gold was India's sixth overall medal and third gold at CWG 2022. All six medals have come in weightlifting.

Sheuli's mark of 313kg challenged Malaysia's Erry Hidayat to log a 176kg successful lift in C&J if he had to jump into the gold-medal spot. The mark, however, proved too challenging for the Malaysian, who had to settle for the silver medal with a total lift of 303kg (138kg + 165kg).

Canada's Shad Darsigny clinched the bronze medal with a 298kg (135kg+166kg) effort.
