Cuts continue as Bears move to finalize 53-man roster

Sept. 05--The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster, readying to reduce their team to 53 players by the NFL's 3 p.m. deadline on Saturday. On Saturday morning, the Tribune confirmed the exits of quarterback Zac Dysert, receiver Ify Umodu and defensive tackle Terry Williams, all placed on waivers by the Bears.

Also cut: offensive lineman Michael Ola, tight end Gannon Sinclair, receiver A.J. Cruz and linebacker Matthew Wells.

Dysert's time as a Bear was short lived. General manager Ryan Pace claimed the third-year quarterback off waivers Tuesday, a day after Dysert was let go by the Denver Broncos. But Dysert saw only limited action late in Thursday's 24-0 preseason win over the Cleveland Browns, completing one of his four pass attempts for 9 yards.

David Fales, who played deep into the third quarter against the Browns, completed 14 of 18 passes in that game for 131 yards with two touchdown passes. With that effort, Fales may have shown enough for the Bears to keep him around as their No. 3 quarterback heading into Week 1.

Ola started 12 games last season as an injury replacement, playing every position but center.

On Friday, the Bears made their first series of cuts. Most notably, linebacker Mason Foster and tight end Dante Rosario were let go. Other players waived included receiver Rashad Lawrence, offensive lineman Connor Boffeli, cornerback Qumain Black and outside linebacker Kyle Woestmann.
