Cute pups snapped outside Scottish polling stations for today's Holyrood election

Cute pups have been snapped outside polling stations across Scotland as their owners cast their ballots in the Holyrood elections.

Millions of Scots are expected to vote for their local representatives to the Scottish Parliament today.

And while the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a number of restrictions in place at polling stations, it hasn’t brought an end to the recent #dogsatpollingstations tradition.

Over recent years, voters have been taking pictures of dogs waiting patiently for their owners to exit from the polling booths. The subsequent snaps are then posted over social media with captions containing the popular hashtag.

No one quite knows the origins of when and how it started - but it’s certainly something to take the edge off what is generally a stressful day everyone involved in elections.

Many adorable dogs have been seen waiting it out in the bitterly cold conditions as Scots cast their votes.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon was one of the many politicians to get involved as well.

The First Minister was pictured outside Anette Street School in Glasgow alongside an appropriately wrapped up dog with SNP candidate Roza Salih.

Former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson also took a snap of ‘Wilson’ ‘doing his democratic duty’ outside her local polling station.

And there is expected to be more taking part in the unofficial tradition all the way through until the polls close at 10pm this evening.

The results of this year’s Holyrood election is likely to be later than usual, with a picture of the vote expected to emerge over the next couple of days.

Scots are voting to elect 129 MSPs to represent them at Holyrood for the next five years.
