
A baby Ezo momonga, a subspecies of the Siberian flying squirrel, peeks out of its tree trunk nest in Obihiro, Hokkaido, on Monday night. Hokkaido is the only place in Japan where Ezo momonga, which are about 15 centimeters long, can be found. The animal is mainly nocturnal and glides in the night sky by stretching out membranes attached to its fore and hind limbs. The baby was born this spring and is likely to leave the nest in mid-June or later.
