Cut weekly food shop costs with top tips from Channel 4's new money-saving show

Channel 4's How to save a grand in 24 hours has dished out some handy tips and tricks that will help you to cut your weekly food shop costs by a fraction.

The brand new show sees Anna Richardson and a team of cost-cutting experts help families revolutionise their lives and homes by saving money and getting the maximum effect from a minimum spend.

In the first episode, chef Gary Usher showed a London family of six how they could cut back on spending on their weekly shop by making the most simple of changes that anyone at home can do too.

Chef Gary's first tip is to make sure you're prepared before you head to the supermarket.

He recommended writing a shopping list and limiting trips to the supermarket to just once a week, which will help curb spending.

"My top tip for Mike and Shareen is to write a shopping list," Gary said.

"Don’t let the supermarkets trick you. They put the chocolate next to the till they put the milk and the bread as far away as possible. Without the list, you just get everything you don’t need.

"If you don’t have a list, you’re a dangerous browser," warned Anna.

Gary also suggested buying food items in bulk and shopping at wholesalers, like a cash and carry.

"Larger items mean more money is spent on the food, not packaging," Anna explained.

Making the swap from supermarkets to wholesalers could save you a whopping 25 per cent the team revealed.

A number of other experts were also brought in to share how the family could renovate their home without the need to call in the professionals.

How To Save A Grand In 24 Hours airs Mondays at 8pm on Channel 4.
